What Will Happen When Bill Haslam Meets St. Peter?

So this is awkward. Ohio Gov. John Kasich is playing the Jesus card with fellow “family values” Republicans who’d rather blindly bash Obamacare than give health care to the working poor in their states. According to Kasich, when these Republicans arrive at the Pearly Gates — and, to be specific, in Tennessee we’re talking about Bill Haslam, Ron Ramsey, Mae Beavers, Stacey Campfield, et al — things won’t go so well.

“I had a conversation with one of the members of the legislature the other day,” said Kasich, who is lobbying Ohio lawmakers to expand Medicaid.

I said, ‘I respect the fact that you believe in small government. I do, too. I also know that you’re a person of faith. Now, when you die and get to the meeting with St. Peter, he’s probably not going to ask you much about what you did about keeping government small. But he is going to ask you what you did for the poor. You better have a good answer.’

What? All these rock-ribbed conservatives might have to answer someday for messing with poor people? St. Peter will need a catalog to keep up with it all. In Haslam's case, we're guessing his excuse — "but I was afraid of the tea party!" — isn't going to fly.
