Urban Legend at Rymer Gallery

Manmade Melancholy

Gabriel Mark’s new series Urban Legend features a set of paintings that reframe the Modern City as a primal landscape springing up from the concrete like a decadent rainforest. In Mark’s paintings, the urban setting is more than a backdrop for man’s dissolution—these asphalt jungles seem to brood in solidarity with their denizens. Now for the Painter, an installation by Chicago artist Catherine Forster, is also featured in the gallery’s project room. Forster’s latest is a video accompanied by 10 paintings inspired by the late seascapes of R.J.W. Turner. Now for the Painter blurs the fluid and solid elements of the seascape, but what comes off as intriguingly abstract is the movement of the water itself.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Oct. 17. Continues through Nov. 14, 2009
