Let’s face it: Comedy open mics can be kind of a drag. By definition, they’re a mixed bag of first-timers and local pros working out half-developed material for a crowd of comics and comedy fans. They’re workshops for shows that you’ll eventually pay money to see weeks and months down the road. What makes Ultimate Comedy, every Tuesday at The East Room, so brilliant is that they aren’t banking on the sign-up list for laughs — the funniest part of the show is the band. The Grey Grays, Gary Fletcher on drums and Sean Parrott on guitar, sound like the band from Space Ghost Coast to Coast catapulted into Music City. It’s a truly silly addition of noise, rimshots and slide whistle that livens up even those most dire amateur set. Alongside host Brad Edwards, one of Nashville’s funniest (and most curmudgeonly) comics, Ultimate Comedy is perhaps the most entertaining open mic in town. Sign up at 8 p.m., show starts at 8:30 p.m.
