When: Fridays-Sundays. Continues through May 21 2012
Tennessee Repertory Theatre recently announced that this Donald Margulies play would be a part of its forthcoming 2012-13 season. But for Nashville premiere honors, Actors Bridge Ensemble will beat them to the punch. Margulies is no stranger to couples drama, his Dinner With Friends having copped a Pulitzer Prize in 2000. Yet the circumstances presented here are vastly different from the upper-middle-class angst of the author’s noted award-winner, as we observe Sarah and James, significant others whose experience as journalists in war-torn Iraq has seriously messed with their heads. They grapple with the ethics of their work and also the possibility of conventional married life, the discussion ripening with the arrival of their editor and his considerably younger new girlfriend. Margulies mixes comedy with sobriety in this contentious look at the contemporary search for fulfillment. After starring in some high-profile local productions over the past few years, actress Kim Bretton makes her ABE directorial debut, as company co-founders Bill Feehely and Vali Forrister reunite onstage in the lead roles. Brian Schlanger and Jillian Gottlieb play the other couple.
