The Twilight Singers w/Margot and the Nuclear So and So's

When: Fri., May 6, 9 p.m. 2011

Twilight Singers' frontman Greg Dulli has been to hell and back since the demise of The Afghan Whigs in 2001. Since then, the enigmatic alt-rock crooner has weathered (and since bested) a coke habit that caused him to “lose half a decade,” according to a recent profile in Q; the death of two close friends, each influential in his own right (Ted Demme and Elliott Smith); and Hurricane Katrina, which wrought havoc on the Singers’ Powder Burns sessions as the storm pummeled his adopted home of New Orleans, the great American city that’s held his heart since the Whigs’ heyday. Of course, Dulli is no stranger to darkness — it defines his work in forms intimate and abstract — but on the Singers’ latest effort, Dynamic Steps, the once deeply troubled songsmith is starting to sound less forlorn and more simply content in his station. The shift — subtle but unmistakable — has occurred without Dulli mitigating the bleak themes and noir aesthetics that have consumed him for two-plus decades, either. Thankfully, happiness can still be a warm gun after all these years.
