We’re not going to lie: We were more than a little disappointed when we got news that reggae legends The Mighty Diamonds had to reschedule their show earlier this month. But we had barely finished cursing Babylon — or specifically, bureaucratic hold-ups from the Department of Homeland Security — when we got the word that rocksteady heroes The Melodians were on their way to Music City. For the unfamiliar, “rocksteady” is the transitional phase between the more upbeat ska era and the slower, deeper style that most people identify with reggae. It also happens to be our personal favorite sub-genre, just in case you were wondering. And this isn’t just another case of us being infatuated with an obscure artist from an obscure micro-moment in music history — The Melodians’ “Rivers of Babylon” from the seminal soundtrack The Harder They Come is one of reggae’s most enduring songs.
