Between Black Lips, Hawks and Balkans, it's starting to sound like the underground indie and punk scene in Hotlanta is a lawless hive of indoor fireworks and bodily fluids. Balkans quickly developed a reputation in the ATL scene for their antics, which, while not nearly as gross or extreme as Black Lips' in their day, reportedly got them kicked out of more than a few venues and basements. But, like the Lips before them, they've calmed down since 2008 (or at least they've run out of fireworks), now focusing instead of angular, super-charged indie rock that netted them kudos from Spin, The Fader and Creative Loafing, who named them the best new local band in 2009. Now touring in the release of their self-titled debut, Balkans' spazzy, high-energy rock songs are good enough that you won't even notice that the band hasn't chucked raw meat at anyone.
