Tenacious D w/The Sights

When: Sat., June 23, 8 p.m. 2012

Oscar Wilde wasn’t joshin’ when he said life imitates art. Just look at novelty rockers Tenacious D. With 18 years of bon-mot-laden masterworks under their belt, a feature film and venues the world over rocked dozens upon dozens of times, household-name-status comedian Jack Black and his would-take-a-bullet-loyal musical wingman Kyle Gass have stretched their comedic shtick as the self-proclaimed “greatest band on Earth” far enough to establish themselves as, well, a hands-down great rock band with a decades-spanning career. The shtick? Just think Dio’s “Rock ’n’ Roll Children,” but expletive ridden and intentionally funny. Like most rock bands of lore, Tenacious D retreated into a self-imposed wilderness period following the commercial disappointment of an ambitious project — the 2006 film/LP The Pick of Destiny. Six years later, with the recent release of its third LP Rize of the Fenix, the duo is ready to see if the rock and comedy fans still find their jokes funny — a quest that has the band back on the road and headed for an historic debut at country music’s Mother Church.
