Summerland Tour 2012 feat. Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Lit & Marcy Playground

When: Mon., Aug. 6, 7 p.m. 2012

Rock music of the ’90s is split into two periods: B.K. and A.K. (i.e. “Before Kurt” and “After Kurt”). This show is for the A.K. crowd. And even for them, The Summerland Tour 2012 lineup might be a little much. Making up the bill are Everclear, Sugar Ray, Gin Blossoms, Lit and Marcy Playground. A Justice League of hopelessly dated, second-string buzz-bin cutouts it is; Lollapalooza, which ironically transpired this very weekend in Chicago, it is not. Remember how you used to scoff at people for going to see ’80s revival package tours featuring acts like The Fixx, Berlin and Culture Club at the time of Everclear’s relevance? Well, if you go to this show, then guess what — now you’re that guy! Embrace it! Just don’t be surprised at the lack of original band members in the house. As this soundtrack-to-Zippergate, alt-rock smorgasbord bill transpires on an arena stage, its existence is as much a reminder of the passing of time as it is of chain wallets, soul patches, spiky bleached-blond ’dos with black roots, sex, Santa Monica and candy.
