Sugar Social

When: Sat., Nov. 13, 2 p.m. 2010

Ace of Cakes, Cake Boss and now, apparently, Just Desserts — an up-tick in sweet-tooth-inspired TV programming comes right on the heels of a sprinkle-topped golden age of cupcakes and the saccharine surge of fro-yo. But with Halloween barely kicked out of bed and most of us still dumping our leftover candy on coworkers, it’s difficult to imagine a pop-up shop of every imaginable confection as a prudent way to while away a Saturday night. Perhaps we should re-frame the debate: In the Middle Ages, sugar was so expensive that mere commoners rarely had the means to indulge. Nowadays, research has all but legislated that the white stuff be reclassified as a drug. So this sugar social isn’t only indulgent, it’s a dangerous night of decadent sugar porn — and it’s the kind that knows all your weird fetishes. Luckily, though, it has a few tricks you didn’t expect: It’s not just desserts, chocolates and baked goods galore, but there’s also a nod to the Puritans in us, with a sampling of allergen-free, organic and healthy options. If only they made the equivalent of alcohol-absorbing sponge pills for this stuff. Admission is $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
