Street Paper

When: Tue., Nov. 20, 7 p.m. 2012

The trouble with The Contributor, Nashville’s wildly successful homeless newspaper, isn’t its business model or its vendors, but the public’s lack of understanding of why it’s necessary. That’s where documentaries like Street Paper come in handy. Focused on The Contributor’s incredible growth in September 2010, Street Paper makes a compelling argument for the existence of for-profit social justice enterprises — even when they clash with the prissy standards of the affluent communities they sometimes touch. Street Paper takes place months before Contributor vendors were ousted from the public rights of way in Franklin and Brentwood, but the film does an outstanding job of explaining the paper’s impact using the voices of those most affected by it. A Q&A session with the film’s director, the paper’s co-founders and various vendors follows the screening.
