When: May 10-26 2013
This show is rated R — for mature themes, sexual situations and strong language — and that should be enough to lure a minor legion of curious theatergoers through the turnstiles. It’s a musical to boot, winner of numerous Tony and Olivier awards, and some Nashvillians will probably recall its brief February 2011 road-show engagement at TPAC. A portrayal of young people in 19th century Germany experiencing hormonal disturbances, dark emotions, tragedy and abuse, Spring Awakening is now being produced regionally all over the U.S., and this is Nashville’s first homegrown production. With an alt-rock musical score by Steven Sater and Duncan Sheik — including an Act 2 number titled “Totally Fucked” — this opus is definitely an attention-getter with cult potential. The young bodies in motion are under the direction of the estimable Martha Wilkinson, with musical direction by Rollie Mains and choreography by Holly Shepherd. The cast features Claire Kaputska, Caleb Marshall, Ryan Garrett, Kacie Phillips, Piper Jones and Christian Redden.
