Sonia Lee makes no bones about her past struggles with the bottle, and her songs frequently address the challenges faced by those recovering from alcoholism. But if this sounds like the recipe for confessional self-help pabulum, think again: Lee is a first-rate singer who at times recalls Alison Krauss, and a talented writer who’s twice been a New Folk finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival. On her brand-new album Butterfly, she teams up with top-shelf Nashville songwriters like Rich Fagan, Marcia Ramirez and Jeremy Spillman. Highlights include folky ballad “On the Other Side,” country shuffle “Looking Like Fun” and the jaunty, Dobro-fueled “Keep on Doin’ What You’re Doin’.” The exceptionally talented Jim Kimball, Reba McEntire’s guitarist, not only produced the record, but played all the instruments. Kimball and several of Lee’s co-writers will join her for the performance.
