Folk chanteuse and former Nashvillian Iris DeMent has an illustrious history of critical acclaim, Grammy nominations and superstar admirers like Merle Haggard and John Prine — but when it comes to releasing new material, this erudite storyteller waits until she’s ready. Sing the Delta, her first album of original material in 16 years (she released Lifeline, an album of gospel covers, in 2004), will drop in October on her Flariella label. The album, which includes contributions from dobro legend Al Perkins and keyboard player Reese Wynans, is composed of songs that DeMent crafted as far back as 1998. Her Nashville stop will include an intimate performance and Q&A session at the Ford Theater at the Hall of Fame in the morning, and a performance at the Grand Ole Opry in the evening.
