Sexy Beasts at The Showroom

Pop, Rock & Roll

The paintings of Nashville artist Jeremy Hughes are deceptively delightful. You see them and smile, not realizing the time bomb he’s set ticking in your gut. A few minutes after turning away from his work you picture one of his comical depictions of the Ghostbusters haunting wallpaper or Barry Lyndon down on his luck and you wonder, didn’t I dream that? Hughes has mastered the visual representation of the common popular experience, and he does it with such deliberate unsteadiness as to give one the impression that the creepy kid in art class is reading everybody’s mind and cramming the visions into his canvas.
Tuesdays-Saturdays. Starts: Nov. 7. Continues through Dec. 3, 2009
