It’s telling that the members of Saintseneca switch instruments so often that they pause in confusion when asked to describe what each person plays. Likewise, the band as a whole switches hats between an all-acoustic presentation that recalls dirt roads and dusty porches, and a meaty rock band fleshed out with rich production. But in person, the Columbus, Ohio, quintet glides with impressive dexterity between both of those iterations, in spite of routine lineup shifts. Case in point: “Happy Alone,” the lead single from Saintseneca’s April 1 release Dark Arc, comes across as either dense or gentle, driving or airily psychedelic, depending on the venue it’s played in. Led by singer-songwriter Zac Little, Saintseneca doesn’t let itself get stuck in the old-timey rut you might expect from a band that uses a dulcimer and saw. Having taken 10 detail-focused months to make Dark Arc, High Watt audiences can look forward to gleaming live arrangements of the new material.
