One of the most satisfying stories in bluegrass over the past couple of years has been the reemergence of IIIrd Tyme Out, now bearing the name of its lone remaining founder, lead singer/guitarist Russell Moore. It’s no slight to the rest of the group to say that’s as it should be, for though they have many strengths, the ultimate one is Moore’s voice; it's one of the best (and not just in bluegrass) — a clear, soaring tenor that conveys an infinite range of emotion and hasn’t lost a thing since Moore won the IBMA’s Male Vocalist of the Year award for a second time in 1997. Want proof? Just consider that he’s come back to win the trophy again for the last two years. Their latest release, Prime Tyme (Rural Rhythm), is tasty, but there’s no substitute for seeing the guys up close and personal.
