Robben Ford

When: Tue., March 4, 9:30 p.m. 2014

Recently the legendary blues and jazz guitarist Robben Ford has been prizing spontaneity. Last year’s album Bringing It Back Home was cut live and fast in a New Orleans studio, and focused on improvisation-fueled recordings of foundational songs by the likes of Dylan, bluesman Charley Patton and songwriting giant Allen Toussaint. After that, Ford came to Music City to make his just-released A Day in Nashville. Nearly true to its title, the bulk of the disc’s nine tracks were cut live in a single day at Sound Kitchen studio, with vocals and overdubs going down in a second day at House of Blues. Having top-notch locals like guitarist Audley Freed, bassist Brian Allen, keyboardist Ricky Peterson, drummer Wes Little and trombonist Barry Green added grease and even more virtuosity to the execution. They’re getting the group back together exclusively for Ford’s two-night stand, which makes these shows a pheromonal lure for both guitar geeks and blues freaks. 9 p.m. March 4, 6 p.m. March 5 at 3rd & Lindsley TED DROZDOWSKI
