Oscar Picks

When: Jan. 25-23 2013

Now that Michael Haneke has a Best Director nomination for Amour, opening Feb. 8 in Nashville — and in a related story, ice skating has commenced in hell — griping about the Academy Awards has been unusually subdued among cinephiles. For the month leading up to its gala Oscar Experience fundraiser Feb. 24, The Belcourt supplements Amour with a cherry-picked roster of current nominees and past winners. The series starts this weekend with Best Picture nominee Beasts of the Southern Wild — congrats to its native Nashvillian co-producer Matt Parker, who’ll be here Jan. 31 for the local premiere of his Sundance 2013 success Mother of George — along with a third look at Best Actor nominee Joaquin Phoenix’s daredevil work in Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master. Coming attractions include a Wine, Food and Film event with Woody Allen’s beloved Annie Hall (Feb. 4); 2013 Best Documentary nominees 5 Broken Cameras (Feb. 5-6), How to Survive a Plague (Feb. 5-7) and Searching for Sugar Man (Feb. 5-7); and weekend screenings of Michael Cimino’s controversial 1978 Best Picture winner The Deer Hunter (Feb. 16-17). See for more information.
