Here’s a sobering thought: For many campers at this year’s Southern Girls Rock & Roll Camp, everything they know about the ‘90s comes from Wikipedia and the wistful recollections of their elder siblings and Gen X parents. But just because they’ve never seen an episode of Saved by the Bell doesn’t mean they can’t benefit from the days when “alternative” meant something (arguably). In the second “Night of the Living Cover Bands” benefit for SGRRC, players from some of the midstate’s most notable local bands form a supergroup to tackle giants from two decades ago. Members of The Protomen and Ascent of Everest do Radiohead, Heavy Cream and Take the Power Back do Sleater-Kinney, the recently defunct Powerbrrrd do Weezer with Bad Cop, Those Darlins rock out as Guided by Voices and more (including covers of Fugazi and The Replacements). All donations go to SGRRC’s “Adopt-A-Camper” scholarship fund.
