Next to Normal

When: April 4-14 2013

Less than a year ago, Boiler Room Theatre presented the Nashville premiere of this acclaimed musical by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey, an ambitious, nearly operatic exploration of severe emotional problems and their toll on a modern family. The BRT effort was wholly respectable, treating the show’s downer subject matter — manic depression, denial and grief, drugs, electroconvulsive therapy — with compelling dramatic clarity. Songs like “Who’s Crazy/My Psychopharmacologist and I,” “Better Than Before,” “Song of Forgetting” and “Didn’t I See This Movie?” don’t shy away from the the painful issues, and director Paul Cook throws down the gauntlet for local theatergoers who like their fare on the daring side. His new Circle Players production features Patrick Kramer, Caitlyn Porayko, Christian Redden, T.J. Adams, Dave Williams, and in the pivotal role of Diana, Aynsley Martindale, a trained mezzo-soprano whose versatile performances have included solo work with the Nashville Symphony, radio gigs with WPLN-FM’s Live in Studio C, worship vocals for St. George’s Episcopal Church and recording dates. Randy Craft is the musical director.
