Nashville Jazz Orchestra w/Bob Mintzer

When: Fri., Feb. 10, 8 p.m. 2012

Guest soloist and Grammy award-winning saxophonist Bob Mintzer kicks off the Nashville Jazz Orchestra’s 2012 Artist Series with fusion flair. Mintzer is well in tune with the fifteen-year-strong Nashville big band powerhouse’s goal of perpetuating jazz. Yellowjackets, the band he has been with for two decades, is currently nominated for two Grammys in the categories of Best Jazz Instrumental Album and Best Instrumental Composition, and has historically garnered nominations in the now-defunct category of Best Contemporary Jazz Album. As well-grooved member, Mintzer offers his unique and experimental voicings to progressive mixes. Papa Lips, as he’s called after a namesake song, couples his pioneering pipery with an effusing repertoire as a prolific performer and composer. He has recorded 30 solo projects and written over 200 big band arrangements. Besides being a primer for the impending Grammy awards on Sunday, this performance should shake up the dust that settled after Sonny Rollins tore the house down at the Schermerhorn in October. Plus the NJO is the best place around to hear some high-fidelity flugelhorn.
