A steady force on Nashville’s improv scene, Nashville Improv Comedy has expanded its scope and developed its philosophy since it was first founded as Nashville Comedy Theater in 2010 by local improv veteran Dylan Kinney. Under the leadership of Lacie Madison and Michael Kearney, NIC met its immediate goals of maintaining a regular performance schedule, hosting classes and holding auditions every six months in search of new talent. Now the group must address the reality of finding a steady home base after the closing of The Next Level. Meanwhile, NIC’s gamesmanship has widened to include a variety of “sideshows,” parodying musicals, British game shows, superhero dramas and action movies, all created spontaneously with NIC’s signature energetic style and a cast that includes musicians, stuntmen, dancers and stand-ups, some of whom have trained with nationally known franchises such as ImprovOlympic, ComedySportz and Upright Citizens Brigade. NIC is also looking to add a late-night showcase, which will explore additional styles of improv. Kicking off the New Year is this “Déjà New” improv show, which asks the scary question: What if every moment in life you had the opportunity for a new choice?
