Some sci-fi and comic book conventions are now multimillion-dollar businesses, filling up convention hotels and maxing out credit cards for a “full star access” package. But give me a good old-fashioned down-and-dirty local event like the annual Nashville Comic and Horror Festival. Ten bucks and you can meet a variety of comic book artists and writers, actors from classic horror movies — including Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson, cult movie legend Lynn Lowry (see story on p. 58) and cast members from the original Night of the Living Dead — as well as local wrestling stars and God knows how many “scream queens” in skimpy outfits who are happy to sell you a photo and autograph. It’s like the difference between a Rolling Stones concert at Bridgestone and a good night at the Springwater — and we all know where the most fun is. Look for me at the table that is selling cheap back issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland.
