Mike Calway-Fagen: In full sight

When: July 13-31 2013

From Back Forward to Again (2012) is one of Mike Calway-Fagen’s most interesting projects: It contains so many of the artist’s pet preoccupations that it can be thought of as a microcosm of his work as a whole. The piece is a slideshow of images that finds Calway-Fagen driving his pickup through back-country dirt roads with an upright piano strapped into the truck’s bed, while recordings from both the inside of the truck’s engine and the piano provide the rumble-plunk soundtrack. From Back captures the artist’s sense of humor, his interest in large-scale projects, his affinity for sound elements and his penchant for recontextualizing familiar objects into new environments where their functions are altered and pressed into the service of the artist’s rough-hewn aesthetics. Calway-Fagen originally hails from Nashville, and this homecoming exhibition at Threesquared incorporates sculpture, photography, and a selected group of collages from his series In Full Sight, which consists of more than 200 works on Bristol board.
