After more than a decade together, Canadian band Metric has transitioned from indie darlings to major festival linchpins with their hybrid of synth-driven rock. They set the bar high for their recently released fifth LP, Synthetica, on the heels of the 2009’s lauded Fantasies. While Fantasies introduced the band to a more mainstream audience with ear-friendly tunes like “Gimme Sympathy,” Synthetica has a slightly sinister, futuristic vibe — lyrically, at least. What Metric is so skilled at is pairing their darker lyrics, delivered by charismatic, moody lead singer Emily Haines, with danceable, melodic pop, following in the footsteps of ’80s goth pop, but with a modern bite. After a summer of playing high-profile festivals such as Sasquatch and Lollapalooza, Metric brings their energetic live show to the Mother Church with Montreal band Half Moon Run.
