Mayhem Performs Madonna's Madonna

When: Fri., Aug. 31, 9:30 p.m. 2012

In case you haven’t heard, Madonna’s current MDNA Tour has, par for the course, been fraught with controversy: outrage over images of a swastika projected on the forehead of a French politician, the use of firearms as stage props, exposing her breast to a Turkish audience. But what should really offend audiences is that the MDNA set list contains not a single song from the singer’s star-making 1983 self-titled debut, which contains such iconic hits as “Lucky Star,” “Borderline,” “Burning Up,” “Holiday” and “Everybody” — songs that despite their aggressively ’80s-sounding production have stood the test of time on the strength of some killer hooks. Though Madge is reluctant to bring those standouts to the stage, local album-performing cover band Mayhem — led by drummer-at-large Jerry Pentecost — is most definitely not. Tonight, with the help of guest vocalists The Lowry Sisters, Larissa Maestroy, Melissa Mathes and more, Pentecost and his crew will take on the seminal MTV-era pop staple in its entirety. Though not required, perms and jean jackets are welcomed.
