Lauren Groff

When: Fri., March 22, 4-5 p.m. 2013

Tennessee has been home to, if not a full-blown utopia, exactly, then at least an idealistic insular community or two in its time, so the backdrop for Lauren Groff’s novel Arcadia shouldn’t seem too alien. The story follows a child named Bit from his early life on a hippie commune in the 1960s and ’70s through the near future of 2018. (Hillary Clinton’s second year in office?) In her review for The New York Times, critic Janet Maslin praised Arcadia’s “transporting magic” and “the raw beauty of Ms. Groff’s prose.” To that, Maslin added, “A book that might have been small, dated and insular winds up feeling timeless and vast.”
