Keane w/Patrick Watson

When: Thu., June 21, 8 p.m. 2012

In most circumstances, I’d recommend burning your money in a trash can over using it to see Keane, the dreadfully British balladeers who have been invading our shores and high school dramas with dreary piano pop for far too long. But opener Patrick Watson makes for a compelling exception. Probably best known as the guy whose Close to Paradise upset both Neon Bible and The Reminder for the Polaris Music Prize in 2007, Watson excels at densely layered folk rock, finding kinship with contemporaries like Andrew Bird and Final Fantasy. Although he took a step toward simplicity with his latest effort, Adventures in Your Own Backyard, Watson’s understanding of music is still well-realized and charming in its warmth. I can only hope that Watson returns on a headlining tour sometime soon, lest I encourage Keane to write more songs like “Somewhere Only We Know” with my dollars.
