A few weeks ago, every single one of your Facebook friends posted a map created by music/tech analyst Paul Lamere depicting what they thought was the most popular artist for each state based on Spotify streams. You can imagine the whole of Tennessee’s surprise when they learned that Juicy J, a co-founder of Memphis crunk overlords (and Academy Award winners) Three Six Mafia, was Tennessee’s best-loved artist. As it turns out, that wasn’t exactly true — the Juice Man was merely the most uniquely popular artist in the Volunteer State — but can’t we just continue to live in a world where Tennessee’s favorite son is the rapper behind the brilliant strip club anthem “Bandz A Make Her Dance”? Juicy J’s latest solo record, Stay Trippy, is trap music at is finest, a Molly-infused banger that keeps its synth beats in the shadows as J and an all-star cast of guests (including opener and older brother Project Pat) rip it hard. Let’s rage.
