Tonight Cumberland Gallery opens two solo exhibitions of new work by gallery stalwarts. John Fraser is a multimedia artist who works in photography, painting and sculpture, but most Cumberland Gallery visitors will be familiar with the artist’s restrained geometric collages. Given his wide range, the most remarkable thing about Fraser’s constructions is their less-is-more aesthetic — his work in Cumberland’s online gallery looks like deconstructed book art featuring paper pasted together and decorated with just a touch of graphite and acrylic paint. Kit Reuther is a well-known Cumberland Gallery veteran whose large abstract paintings often include collections of forms organized against a background, eschewing the flat surfaces that many abstract painters struggle to achieve.
