Jason and the Scorchers

When: Sat., Dec. 31, 9 p.m. 2011

If the idea of spending your New Year’s Eve at somebody else’s anniversary party is less than appealing, rest assured this isn’t one of those nights where you’ll be expected to improvise a heartfelt toast to the happy couple just about the time your third glass of champagne kicks in. This is the night that Jason & the Scorchers are celebrating 30 years of country-punk crowd-slaying, and they're recording the proceedings for a live DVD. The band’s had a hiatus or two during their three decades together, but the important thing is how they upended Nashville genre divisions when they started playing around town in 1981 — as The Nashville Scorchers then — and word of the ruckus spread with their 1982 EP Reckless Country Soul. Half the lineup has changed; founding dynamos Jason Ringenberg and Warner Hodges have a different rhythm section behind them now. But they’re not going through the motions for nostalgia’s sake. The Scorchers’ 2010 album, Halcyon Times, proved that they still have it in them to kick hillbilly hard-rock ass.
