You have to hand it to local outfit Hurts To Laugh: While the guitar-and-drums-rock ’n’ roll duo thing may seem a bit tired at first glance, they don’t adhere predictably and mind-numbingly to the two-piece archetype. Where the average power duo siphons the progressions and tones of old blues greats and repurposes them as messy, minimalist rock ’n’ roll, Hurts To Laugh instead draws influence from hard rock and metal. Rather than slide guitar and pentatonic riffs, HTL’s stock in trade is mean, down-tuned, chugging power chords. Where the average rock duo worships at the altars of, say, Link Wray, Robert Johnson and Son House, you’re probably more likely to find Hurts To Laugh bowing down to classic rock and metal dudes like Metallica and AC/DC and stoner-metal slackers Weedeater … and maybe even a little bit of Mountain thrown in there for good measure. Plus, they’ve got a singing drummer. Everybody likes a singing drummer (no Don Henley jokes, please). Tonight, HTL will premiere “a live performance video collaboration with Sternwood TV … shot and directed by Roderick Trestrail.” And speaking of HTL’s live performances, the duo has been known to light things on fire and kick shit over. Prepare accordingly. Fancytramp and The Vibes open.
