PBS bills its latest series as a cross between Antiques Roadshow and History Detectives, but I’d prefer to think of it as a public television version of The Maury Povich Show — with cries of “You are NOT the father!” and “Bitch, I told you!” spewing from the mouths of erudite scholars in herringbone tweed. The premiere season features participants from four American cities — Nashville, Austin, Detroit and San Francisco — who want to explore unverified genealogical claims passed down through family histories that may (or may not) connect them to an event or an historical figure. The Nashville episode, which will be filmed before a live audience today at the Belmont Mansion, will air this fall. The season begins Sept. 23 on NPT and PBS stations nationwide.
