Francois Deschamps' "Yellow Kid" at Sarratt Gallery

A New York-based photographer and book artist, Deschamps uses his photography as a means of constructing—or in this case, reconstructing—a story. “Yellow Kid” Gerontion was a storyteller and con artist in Catskill, N.Y., who frequented the bars in his community but rarely let anyone into his house. Once he died, the contents of his home became a way of unraveling the mysterious man’s story. Deschamps’ exhibit consists of actual images found in Yellow Kid’s house as well as nostalgically styled contemporary photographs of its interior. His work questions how someone reinvents himself as a legend, and what happens when the myth is left in society’s hands.
