It might seem counterintuitive in this socially networked, media-saturated world, but we’re of the opinion that the best way to promote yourself and your music is to not really worry about promoting your music. Seriously, every moment you spend spamming our newsfeed is a moment you could spend making music, and no amount of self-promotion will make up for that fact that your music still sucks. But then there are artists like Chelsea Crowell — she hardly promotes anything, but has us paying attention whenever she does. Her latest album, Crystal City, is a thing of fragile beauty — an avant-folk record that deserves attention, and rewards that attention with tautly crafted tunes that lilt in and out of your brain. We’re paying attention precisely because of the music — and the fact that we haven’t blocked her from our news feed.
