If you wanted to try fabricating a coastal rivalry out of the soul revival that’s taken root over the last decade or so, Fitz and the Tantrums would make a fine choice to play Tupac to Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings’ Biggie. Not that there’s a rivalry, of course, but Fitz’s poppy, liquid hooks do contrast nicely with the gritty funk of the East Coast brand. But while the Dap-Tone crew maintain a tight focus on dutifully capturing the feel of a bygone era — right down to their geekily vetted vintage recording gear — the Tantrums are, by their own admission, an indie pop band with a heavy Stax-Motown influence. An indie-pop band with no guitars cranking out dance-inducing soul jams? Oh yes, it’s as unlikely as it sounds, and it’ll make you move.
