Explorer's Club w/Bows and Arrows & Ohtis

When: Thu., Jan. 20, 9 p.m. 2011

Freedom Wind, the awesomely titled Explorer’s Club debut, is the sound of a band not so much paying homage to sunny ‘60s orchestral pop, but rather flat-out wishing that they’d been born of that era. The sextet’s obvious reference point is The Beach Boys, and unlike with Panda Bear or Grizzly Bear, Brian Wilson’s influence here is not abstract. Take the pitch-perfect four-part harmonies and reverb-soaked tom fills of “Do You Love Me,” or the album’s cover art — a not-so-subtle nod to the Boys’ All Summer Long. Indeed, in neither sound nor aesthetic are The Explorer’s Club attempting to mask their adoration for the simplistic West Coast ideal, one singularly blossoming with the nostalgic mist of surf, sun and young love. Fortunately, the band’s bold, explicit vision is met with an undeniable ability to bring it to life: The Explorer’s Club are, before anything else, masterful songwriters.
