Alfred Uhry’s 1987 play about the relationship between an elderly Southern woman and her African-American chauffeur gained a great deal of popularity after the 1989 feature film version starring Morgan Freeman and Jessica Tandy. Yet the stage work was originally blessed with a 1,195-performance off-Broadway run, and Uhry was awarded the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. A 2010 Broadway revival with James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave was also a big success. Chaffin’s Barn Dinner Theatre brings in the new year with a hugely promising interpretation of the beloved script, directed by the multitalented Martha Wilkinson and featuring veteran players Mary Jane Harvill, Joel Diggs and Warren Gore.
