Dos Cobras

When: Sun., May 15, 8 p.m. 2011

If you read the song titles on Dos Cobras’ new five-song EP Cobra Country — “That’s What I Get for Drinkin’,” “Daddy Needs a Drink,” “Drunk on Dreams, “Barfly” and “Hillbilly Haven” — it won’t come as much of a shock that they are best savored late at night in a dark, beer-stained honky-tonk. That’s why we suggest you get your shitkickers on and hightail it down to Layla’s and check out the latest craze on Lower Broad, a 100-proof dose of Parsons meets Skynyrd meets Hank the First. Started by DB Harris (Men of Action) and guitar wunderkind Matthew Paige (formerly of Vancouver, Wash.’s Love Trucker), Dos Cobras recently added a third singer-slinger: recent Los Angeles transplant Dave Gleason. Dave Alvin of The Blasters once said, “If Dave Gleason walks into the room, I set my guitar down." ’Nuff said. So should they be Tres Cobras now? Well, you can debate that issue with them tonight at Layla’s over a shot and beer — assuming you’re buying. 8 p.m. at Layla’s Bluegrass Inn; also playing 2:30-6 p.m. May 13 at Robert’s Western World, May 17 at The Basement’s New Faces Night, and 9 p.m. every Wednesday in May at the Family Wash.
