Dorothy O'Connor

When: April 6-June 30 2013

Cheekwood’s latest artist-in-residence, Dorothy O’Connor has been hard at work on the elaborate installations for her exhibit Shelter, an extension of a seven-year series titled Scenes. The artist constructs otherworldly environments, incorporates live models, and captures it all with a large-format camera — taking the multilayered project through a cycle of installation to performance art to photography. As part of her residency, O’Connor has transformed multiple gallery spaces into an enchanted handmade forest inspired by the museum’s own surroundings. This is the first installment of Scenes to be created entirely outside O’Connor’s Atlanta studio. Thanks to recent renovations and Cheekwood’s new on-site studio, the public got to watch the entire installation unfold. For the first time in the residency program’s history, Cheekwood offered open studio hours so visitors could watch the artist work in her natural habitat. Don’t miss the final result, which opens today.
