Fresh off the release of 2008’s Fate, Philadelphia neo-psychedelia outfit Dr. Dog last played here with fellow Northern Soul-influenced five-piece Delta Spirit at 3rd & Lindsley in September. Before then, Dr. Dog’s first two major-label full-length releases drew an exhausting amount of comparisons to The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The Band, Badfinger and potentially every other ‘60s rock act that starts with the letter B. But Fate, their third with Park the Van Records, proved they were capable of branching out. While the band’s passion for full, lush arrangements and multifaceted instrumentation shone through last September, 3rd & Lindsley’s dinner-friendly layout notably hindered both the number and energy of those looking to rock. Set to unfold before Mercy Lounge’s table- and chair-free hardwood dance utopia, that shouldn’t be an issue this time around.
