When: Feb. 1-March 1, 2-4 p.m. 2013
It’s easy to overlook the Metro Arts Gallery — it’s really not much more than a hallway on the fourth floor of a city government building. But Milwaukee artist Della Wells’ presence there deserves all the attention we can muster — she’s a singular talent with a knack for visual narrative and a galvanizing story to tell. Last week, Martin Brady alluded to the exhibit in his preview of a play based on Wells’ life that Nashville Children’s Theatre is currently producing, which is also titled Don’t Tell Me I Can’t Fly. Still, her collages and pen-and-ink drawings deserve consideration all their own: Think Romare Bearden with intense quilt-inspired graphics, or domestic scenes with the style and strong silhouettes of Henri Matisse or Kara Walker. Wells will be in attendance at today’s exhibition opening, and selected works will be for sale.
