Dawes w/Simone Felice & Aaron Embry

When: Sun., Aug. 12, 8 p.m. 2012

OK, so maybe it was a little weird when the boys from Dawes surfaced on an episode of Parenthood. But it’s difficult to fault them for seizing the opportunity to get on a prime-time stage — after all, they’ve been playing on so many of them, large and small, seemingly without rest since the release of 2009’s excellent debut, North Hills. The Laurel Canyon revivalists are a little slicker now, and can count gigs with Jackson Browne and Mumford’s Gentleman of the Road tour as fancy résumé credits. All semblance of “fancy” disappears, however, when Dawes play live. Instead, they seem visibly fueled from every off-key note that the audience bellows along, making loose, warm rock ’n’ roll anchored by Taylor Goldsmith’s sunny, virtuosic riffs and scrunched-up guitar-faces. These guys are all heart — they couldn’t fake it if they tried (see Parenthood).
