The Cumberland Gallery bunch will be hosting tonight's event, but don't roll into Green Hills expecting an art opening. For this showing of new paintings by Dane Carder, the gallery is inviting everyone to the artist's studio to view finished pieces and works in progress. Carder still uses Civil War photos as a jumping-off point, but these new panels find him working much larger and with more intensity, thanks to his always-improving technique. A painting like “Hanging Day” may look like a photorealistic piece from a distance, but upon closer inspection, solid lines go blurry and individual figures dissolve into nebulous abstraction. The effect replaces a viewer's visual comprehension of a scene at a gallows gathering with an empathic connection to Carder's brutal subject.
