I’ve said it before — TV was a lot more awesome when there were only three commercial networks. Back in 1978, millions of kids pestered the crap out of their parents to stay up late on Halloween night and watch the made-for-TV mutt Devil Dog: The Hound of Hell, and they huddled in schoolyards across America the next day to compare notes. If it were released today, however, Devil Dog would receive no more than a late-night dump on Syfy Channel and then instant obscurity. Directed by avant-garde exploitation auteur Curtis Harrington, Devil Dog is a who’s who of Hollywood B-movie stars including Richard Crenna, Yvette Mimieux, Martine Beswick, R.G. Armstrong and Victor Jory, along with Ike Eisenmann and Kim Richards (Escape From Witch Mountain) as the siblings who have their souls mauled by the Pooch of Perversion. So don’t miss it — and if you want to wear your jammies and bring along a blankie to hide from the scary parts, I’m sure the fine folks at the Cult Fiction Undergound will accommodate you.
