It’s essential to our collective emotional health that we maintain our belief in the possibility of life-after-label deals for all the dropped yet gifted artists in these parts. Courtney Jaye has been a big help with that, considering that she’s released her best and most interesting music since parting ways with Island Records. Exhibit one is 2010’s triumph of tropical, torch and twang The Exotic Sounds of Courtney Jaye. And she’s got a new album on the way, this one cut with Miranda Lambert producer Mike Wrucke. Megan McCormick put out her self-titled debut on Rykodisc a couple years back, but from the sound of her Facebook posts, she’s now trying to establish her indie footing with a refreshingly unvarnished new EP, Just One More; it proves her sophisticated pop songwriting chops are in fighting shape. At a slightly different place on the career ride, sensitive troubadour Marc Scibilia is getting ready to release a Jason Lehning-produced EP on Sony/ATV’s in-house label.
