Chuck Mead and His Grassy Knoll Boys

When: Wed., July 28, 9 p.m. 2010

With BR-549 on long-term hiatus, what’s a surviving frontman and founder to do? For Chuck Mead, self-described journeyman, the answer’s pretty simple: take off on his own on a variety of projects. For one, he’s served as musical director for the Tony-winning Broadway show Million Dollar Quartet; for another, he went on tour in Europe with the excellent Dutch group Hillbilly Boogiemen (with whom he was playing when the flood came). But the steadiest work has come with his Grassy Knoll Boys, a band with enough finesse to tackle the wide range of songs and styles found on Mead’s solo debut, Journeyman’s Wager, and enough muscle to drive each one home while giving their talented bossman plenty of room to move and groove. There’s room, too, on the setlist for BR-549 favorites such as “Little Ramona (Gone Hillbilly Nuts),” just in case you were wondering.
