Brass Band of Nashville

When: Sat., Aug. 4, 7 p.m. 2012

A mere four years old, Brass Band of Nashville is a volunteer-led, British-style brass band that offers free performances to audiences throughout the city. While details are sparse for the upcoming Eastwood Christian Church performance, confirmed works include pieces from Sousa and Gabrieli. It comes as no surprise to see Sousa’s name tossed about, but the latter may raise a brow or two. Giovanni Gabrieli straddled the Renaissance and Baroque eras, serving as an organist for multiple cathedrals. The intricate layouts of these churches inspired Gabrieli to compose acoustically based works, focusing on the positioning of musicians as much as the music itself. Through his groundbreaking methods, horn-riddled works such as Canzoni et Sonate and Sacrae Symphoniae reinvented brass instrumentation across the board. Although it is uncertain which Gabrieli piece BBoN plans to showcase, the homage alone is a commendable gesture and will flourish in Eastwood’s towering sanctuary.
