In the Knoxville News-Sentinel this morning, Michael Collins speaks with Amy DesJarlais, the second and current wife of Congressman Scott DesJarlais. Mrs. DesJarlais, who has been married to the congressman for 10 years, tells Collins she doesn't recognize the man described in the records of his divorce:
"What's in the divorce records is not the husband I've had for 10 years," she told the News Sentinel in her first public comments on the latest accusations that have shaken her husband's re-election campaign.
"I've never seen that side of him," she said.
Mrs. DesJarlais said she and the couple's three children — Tyler, 17, Ryan, 14, and Maggie, 5 — have been hurt by the public airing of the allegations during her husband's political campaigns.
DesJarlais, a Jasper Republican who represents Tennessee's 4th Congressional District, is locked in a tough re-election battle against Democrat Eric Stewart, a state senator from Belvidere.
"I realize, of course, that this can get ugly," Amy DesJarlais said of politics. But, she stressed, "our marriage is very firm, positive."
Like her husband, Amy DesJarlais says voters should judge him based on the father and husband he is now. She also tells the News-Sentinel that "the divorce records speak nothing of his character."
